The Beauty of Basics

As you all well know, we here at Retail Therapy cannot get enough of wild prints and fun patterns. But, there is something to be said about basics. To be honest, they get a bad rep with that name. “Basic” sounds so… boring. But, in reality, they are anything but. A basic white tee can be worn with a leather mini-skirt to create an chic, alternative look. And what goes better with your printed palazzo pants? A solid, black camisole, right? Of course, the best canvas for a bright red lip (which we never tire of) is always jeans and a tee. So, basics may be “basic” but they can be real game changers, too. So, we’re giving them the credit they deserve in this post, and of course, showing you some amazing looks that we’ve got here at 2086 Chestnut. Just some basic Retail Therapy, ya know?

IMG_1133The other great thing about basics is that you really notice details much more when they are set against a simple background. For example, this Alexander Wang crew neck t-shirt. From afar, it looks like a very soft, very flattering t-shirt, right? Well, it is that, no doubt about it (C’mon, it’s so flattering that our personal shopper here felt comfortable enough to actually show her face!). But takeIMG_1139 a closer look at it and you can see that it has very fine ribbing and a sheer collar that would probably go unnoticed in a different style. And, look how amazing this simple yet beautiful London Manori double ring gold-filled necklace looks resting upon the soft, heather grey of the t-shirt.

IMG_1125Anyone who thinks basics are black, white, and boring could not be more wrong. This feather-weight, army green tee is anything but boring. For one thing, the color is universally flattering, and should pretty much be a staple in anyone’s closet since it goes with everything (even different shades of theIMG_1130 same color!), and the high-low hem and flowing shape create a shirt that can be worn dressed up with some nice trousers and heels, or dressed down with boyfriend jeans and a scarf for coffee in the sun. And, we couldn’t help but throw in another London Manori necklace to show how pretty this top looks with a little bit of bling.

IMG_1143This tank top is definitely not your typical white tank top. The ribbing and soft fabric are that of your favorite t-shirt, but the grecian inspired draping is unique and can be worn for a night out or a morning in. What’s really great about this top is that the draping in the front hides any sort of lumpsIMG_1145 or bumps that sometimes white t-shirts tend to highlight. The bag we’ve paired it with is a fun twist on a basic hand-bag in that it can also be worn as a backpack. Who’s basic now?

IMG_1192For this last look we are digging into the personal closet of one of our personal shoppers. She has paired her Retail Therapy grey crop top with a striped, jersey pencil skirt and her favorite booties. Now, when you see this outfit, do you say “Look how boring that t-shirt is!” or “Look how cute that simple t-shirt looks with that skirt!”? That’s what we thought.

So, come into Retail Therapy on 2086 Chestnut Street to replenish your basics supply, and to try out some different outfit ideas with our expert stylists!
